Dab Pens: the elegant alternative to vaporizers

Until recently, dab rigs were the only viable alternative for vaporizing herbal extracts or concentrates. However, about 10 years ago, the first dab pen for BHO vaporization hit the market. A lot of time has passed since then, and wax pens are now not only an equally viable alternative to dab rigs, but are even a step ahead in some areas.

Dab pens are characterized primarily by their ease of use. Simply pour the extract into the atomizer, and you're ready to go. The advantage of the wax pen, however, lies not only in its simplicity, but also in its portability and discreetness, as it looks almost identical to an e-cigarette.

In the meantime, quite a few things have changed in terms of technology when it comes to dab pens. Not only have battery performance increased considerably, but the atomizers are now largely equipped with variable voltage.

Different types of wax pens

Do you prefer concentrates or are you more of an oil person? Whatever your choice, there are vaporizers for each type of extract that are suited for a specific type of dab material. Before you rush into a decision and buy a vaporizer that isn't suitable for your needs, we'll briefly explain the different types of dab pens here.

• Tank-style dab pens: This type of vaporizer features a tank, usually made of glass, that can be filled with various types of oils. The major advantage of these pens is that you can fill them with your own concentrates.
• Prefilled cartridges: These dab pens come with cartridges already filled with dab material. They have a very simple design. Once a cartridge is empty, it is usually discarded and replaced with a prefilled one. This type of dabbing pen is characterized by its exceptional ease of use.
• Dabbing pens with heating coils: These handy vapes don't have a tank. Instead, they consist of a chamber and a heating coil designed to vaporize wax-like concentrates.

How exactly do dab pens work?

Dab pens essentially work just like e-cigarettes. The standard pen usually consists of three main parts:

• Battery: These batteries are not batteries, but rather variable voltage batteries. This means the user can increase or decrease the voltage settings at the touch of a button. This function is usually controlled by various press combinations of the power button or a separate control.
• Atomizer: Atomizers are divided into wicked, wickless and ceramic coils.
  • Wicked: Wicked atomizers are standard with a wick and are more suitable for liquid extracts.
  • Wickless: Wickless pens are dab pens without a wick. These are better suited for thicker concentrates and deliver better flavor than atomizers with a wick.
  • Ceramic: This type of atomizer is technically at the cutting edge. It delivers the best flavor because the concentrate doesn't come into contact with the heating coil, thus burning more slowly and delivering the best flavor.
• Mouthpiece: The mouthpiece is the final step before inhaling. It's important to clean it after a few dabs. Otherwise, it can become clogged over time with extract residue, or at least reduce the flow rate.
