About Pay Pay:
Pay-Pay, the maker of the world's first unbleached paper, is from Alcoy, Spain. Pay-Pay is the oldest cigarette paper brand in the world, founded in 1764. Pay-Pay papers were originally traded by Spanish sailors for cotton and tobacco in North America. This is the earliest record of commercially produced cigarette paper entering the North American market.
In addition, the papers are manufactured in production facilities that are 100% powered by renewable energy, the adhesive surface is made from organic rubber and contains neither chemical additives nor chlorine.
The History of Paypay
1764
The first cigarette paper factory is installed in Alcoy
By the mid-18th century, the custom of smoking tobacco, brought from America, had spread in Spain. In Europe, however, tobacco was an extremely expensive product, smoked on the plant's own leaves, so many people chose to consume it in powder form or wrapped in newspaper.
To prevent this thick paper from being smoked with ink, the entrepreneurs of the time developed a thinner paper than usual, 40 g/m2, white, made of large sheets the size of the sheet (double sheet) that the smoker could cut according to his taste and needs. Soon this paper, designed exclusively for smoking, a wonderful discovery, began to have great success worldwide. This is the primitive PAY-PAY of Alcoy.
1815
The cigarette paper booklet is invented
With the beginning of the 19th century, the fashion for powdered tobacco declined, the habit of rolling it became widespread and with it came the need to serve paper in a size more suitable for cigarettes. A Dominican from the Valencian town of Xátiva, Father Jaime Villanueva Estingo, invented the cigarette paper booklet: a delicate object and a great invention whose use continues to this day. Workshops on cigarette papers are becoming more and more common in Alcoy, the PAY-PAY workshop is one of them. The covers had beautiful allegorical engravings and the name of the manufacturer - Pascual Ivorra - engraved on them. They were also printed in long series on the history of Spain, on famous figures and characters, on customs, costumes, allegories, sayings... and today offer us a complete vision of the social development and customs of that time.
1883
Gummed paper is invented
A small line of gum arabic is applied to one of the larger sides of the cigarette paper, which makes rolling the cigarette easier.
1894
The Zigzag
A method for curling the leaves is recorded: the zigzag shape used in the current brochures.
