What is a Rosin Press?

As the name suggests, a rosin press is a press that works without any solvents, just with pressure and heat. With the press, you can make your own rosin for dabs etc. The press works with two plates that are heated and then press your plant material together, resulting in the finest concentrates. You can either adjust the pressure or operate the rosin press manually, depending on the model. The temperature can be set to the exact degree.

In principle, you can put all kinds of plant materials between the plates. This includes flowers, buds, buds, kief, hash, leaves and trimmings. It should be mentioned that the quality of the plant material naturally determines the result. In general, the plant material, the temperature and the pressure settings determine the end result. The rosin can be used as a dab after a few minutes of cooling. For storage, you should use containers made of silicone or specially coated wrapping paper.

What do you need for pressing?

• Rosin Presse
• Power connection
• Baking paper / parchment paper
• Possibly rosin bags
• Plant material

As with almost every process, there are tools that make the production even more qualitative. Simple baking paper is enough to wrap the plant material, but you can make your work easier with sturdy paper with a special coating. You can increase the quality of the extract with rosin bags. These are fine sieves made of heat-resistant plastic, which are available as ready-made filter bags or can be bought as sheets for folding and sewing.

The function of these rosin bags is to filter the pressed rosin and hold the plant material together. This means that the pressure is evenly distributed and the pressing takes place without any problems. These bags are available in different mesh sizes so that you can get the maximum out of the plant material. The mesh size is given in microns or micrometers.

How is the pressing done?

1. Place the Rosin press securely and stably and plug in the cable.
2. Turn on the Rosin press and define the desired temperature and pressure settings.
3. Wait a few minutes until the plates have heated up.
4. Place the plant material between baking paper / parchment paper - possibly use additional rosin bags - and place the whole package between the two plates.
5. The pressing process can now be started.
6. When the rosin flow stops, stop pressing.
7. Allow the rosin to cool for a short time and then enjoy or store.
8. The remains of the pressed material can also still be used. The taste and effectiveness will of course be less.

In addition to the quality of the plant material, the ratio of pressure and temperature is crucial. These settings vary depending on the source material and must be determined for each individual composition. The aim of each pressing is to have as many aromatic terpenes as possible in the concentrate. Terpenes disappear quickly when exposed to heat. With increased pressure, the temperature can be reduced and this means that more terpenes remain in your extract. Depending on the settings you make, you can produce a variety of rosin, which differ in consistency, structure and purity.

The result of your pressing is influenced by four parameters:

• Temperature
• Pressure
• Duration of pressing
• Quality and properties of the plant material

Advantages of a Rosin Press

• Solvent-free
• Low effort
• Easy handling
• Fast execution
• Pays off in the long run

Some processes use solvents containing chemicals such as butane or isopryl alcohol to extract rosin from the plant material. These agents can be harmful to health if not used correctly and safely. With a rosin press, no solvents are needed for extraction, only heat and pressure are necessary.

A rosin press is not cheap, depending on the model, size and possible yield per pressing. However, investing in such a device will pay off in the long run if you regularly use dabs. In the long run, it is definitely cheaper to make concentrates yourself than to always buy them.
