Build your own bong

You want to learn how to build a bong yourself? Then you've come to the right place! Build your own bong with a few simple items in your own home.

What is a bong?

A bong is a water pipe with which large amounts of smoke can be sucked in. The advantage is that a large part of the harmful substances can be filtered through the water and any additional filter systems (such as percolators, honeycombs, etc.). The smoke is pleasantly pre-cooled by the chamber and the water, sometimes also by ice, to give you a smoother hit.

Build a bong yourself

You can build a bong yourself in just a few steps. You will need the following items:

♢ A plastic bottle (bong body)

♢ A biros (chillum replacement)

♢ A lighter

A paper clip (for cutting out the holes)

Adhesive tape or some modelling clay (to seal the bong)

  1. First, start with the holes in the bottle. Take the lighter and heat the paper clip so that you can cut out a small round circle (note: about the diameter of the biros) in the lower third of the bottle. You may have to light it a few times to make a nice round circle. The rounder and more accurate, the less you have to seal afterwards. You need a second hole on the back/front so that your bong also has a kick hole. This way you get all the smoke out of the plastic bottle when you draw/inhale. Again, simply cut a hole of similar size.
  2. Next, unscrew the pen. The outer shell will become our chillum. Put the biros into the first hole so that it reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle and sticks out about halfway.
  3. As a bong head, you can usually use the front tip of the bong. Biros if it is made of metal. You can then turn this tip upside down and attach it with the adhesive tape to our Biros Attach the chillum. Here if necessary something else with Plasticine to avoid losing pressure. !! ATTENTION !!! Make sure that the head is not made of plastic or aluminium foil. This can release substances that are hazardous to health!
  4. Now fill the bottle with water, so that it bubbles nicely but nothing runs out of the kick hole 😉 .
  5. The self-made bottle bong is ready! PS: If it didn't work out perfectly with the biros, we have a simple but effective tool for you in our shop! TOPPUFF The TOPPUFF turns any bottle with a standard thread into a bottle bong IMMEDIATELY.

Additional tips on bong construction:

  • Try using a hot glue gun instead of tape to achieve a higher degree of density. Pun intended.
  • Instead of water, fruit juices or water with food colouring can also be poured in, because the eye smokes with you.

If you don't like to tinker or if you are considering to change to a higher quality bong, please have a look in our our bong shop around. We offer you for example cheap festival bongsso you don't have to make one yourself and it doesn't matter if it doesn't survive the festival. Furthermore we also have cheap glass bongs with all kinds of features (percolators, diffusers etc.). We are sure that you will find the right bong for you.

How do I smoke my self-made bong?

Bong smoking has to be learned. To avoid coughing your guts out, follow the guide below:

  1. Fill your bong head with the incense of your choice.
  2. Hold the kick hole closed. Suck on the mouthpiece and light the herb at the other end. Negative pressure is created in the bong because air can only flow in through the small hole in the chillum. The whole head now starts to glow and the smoke passes through the filtering water into the bong body.
  3. In the last step, open the kick hole or pull out the cap to inhale the rest of the smoke at once!

Additional tips for bong smoking:

  • If you are testing a bong for the first time, start with a little herb first, because you can always increase it!
  • If you use bongs often, treat yourself to a glass bong. These guarantee the best smoke flavour and are much easier to clean than their plastic counterparts.
  • To increase the smoking comfort even more, there are special bongs with iceboxes, percolators and diffusers, which swirl the smoke and cool it down at the same time.

    Hey Albert,

I am currently looking for ballpoint pens whose head is not made of aluminium. How can I tell what metal the head is made of? I've used a magnet so far because aluminium is not magnetic, but all 30 pens I've checked have a non-magnetic head. Is there a better way to tell if a head is made of aluminium?

    Greetings Michel

      Hi Michel,

I only know the test that no sparks occur when sawing aluminium. But probably not with plastic either. But you could simply work the head with a clipper. If it melts, don't pull a little hat out of it 😀

      Kind regards

        Hello Sando,

I have just looked into the subject again. According to German regulations, an intake of 1 milligram of aluminium per week and kilogram of body weight is considered safe. In other countries this limit is even higher, in France for example 2 milligrams. A typical aluminium bong head weighs 3-4 grams, i.e. if the head has not completely decomposed after about a year of using the bong (which is unlikely to happen), you are below the critical limit for aluminium. And that is a pessimistic calculation, since not all the aluminium that the head loses in mass is actually inhaled. According to these considerations, the use of an aluminium head in the bong should actually be completely harmless.

        Cheers,
        Michel
