Meaning and history
What do these three letters stand for? OCB stands for Odet Cascadec Bolloré. These three individual words are each proper names in their own right. Odet is a French river that runs through Quimper and finally ends in the Atlantic Ocean at Bénodet. The first paper mill was founded on the banks of this river in the commune of Ergué-Gabéric, Finistère in 1822. In 1893, another mill was added to the site in Cascadec. Today, however, it is owned by the Glatfelter Group. Last but not least, the name Bolloré. As most of you have already guessed correctly, this is the surname of the founding family.
At first, the company produced copying paper for letters, coton paper and muslin paper. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cigarette wave conquered France and also established itself on the world market. Thus, the focus shifted away from writing paper and towards the production of cigarette paper. 1918 was the birth year of the OCB brand and the first papers were produced and sold. In 1923, the brand was registered with the "Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle" as a registered trademark. It did not take long for OCB's high quality to pay off. Demand grew and the company began to export large quantities of cigarette paper. Another decisive step happened in the 90s when the grandson of the founder, Vincent Bolloré, bought out a competitor. It was none other than the traditional company JOB from Perpignan, which also stood for the finest quality rolling paper and still does today.
In 2000, Don Levin, owner of the American Republic Tobacco group and Bolloré Technologies' main customer, acquired the OCB brand and the Perpignan factory. Since then, the product portfolio has expanded and the brand has gained cult status.
