About Rizla:

In 1660, the Lacroix family began producing cigarette paper in earnest. Despite early success, it was not until 76 years later that the family purchased their own paper mill, financed by Francois Lacroix, who had also founded the Lacroix Rolling Paper Company in 1736.

The Lacroix company received a large production order in 1796. During the French Revolution, Napoleon commissioned the company to produce cigarette paper for soldiers, who had previously been forced to use book pages to roll their cigarettes.

In 1860, Pierre Lacroix improved the manufacturing process for Lacroix cigarette papers. In 1865, the process was changed again, using rice instead of tissue, giving the paper the name "RizLa+"; a combination of the French word for rice "riz", "la" and the cross (French "croix") that represented the family. The company was renamed in 1866.

RizLa+ was so successful that by 1891 the Lacroix family had accumulated enough wealth to build a castle-like building called the “Château Léonide Lacroix.” The Lacroix family sold their product throughout Europe and the United States (as of 1900).

Rizla also invented and produced the first pocket rolling machine in 1928. The Lacroix brothers obtained a patent for attaching an eraser to the edge of the rolling paper. It was the moment when the brand revolutionized the world of rolling paper.
