Meaning and history of OCBs papers

What do these three letters stand for? OCB stands for Odet Cascadec Bolloré. These three individual words are each independent proper nouns. Odet is a French river that flows through Quimper and finally ends in the Atlantic Ocean near Bénodet. On the banks of this river in the municipality of Ergué-Gabéric, Finistère, the first paper mill was founded in 1822. In 1893, another mill was added in Cascadec. Today, however, it is owned by the Glatfelter Group. Last but not least, the name BolloréAs most of you have guessed, this is the surname of the founding family.

Initially, the company produced copy paper for letters, cotton paper, and muslin paper. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cigarette craze swept France and established itself on the global market. Thus, the focus shifted from writing paper to the production of cigarette paper. 1918 was the year the OCB brand was born, and the first rolling papers were produced and sold. In 1923, it was registered as a trademark with the "Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle." It wasn't long before OCB's high quality paid off. Demand grew steadily, and the company began exporting large quantities of cigarette paper. Another decisive step occurred in the 90s when the founder's grandson, Vincent Bolloré, acquired a competitor. It was none other than the traditional company JOB from Perpignan, which also stood for the finest rolling papers and still does today.

In 2000, Don Levin, owner of the American Republic Tobacco group and a major customer of Bolloré Technologies, acquired the OCB brand and the factory in Perpignan. Since then, the product portfolio has continued to expand, and the brand has achieved cult status.
